1- Rock magnetism

- rock magnetism for structural and diagenetic applications in predominantly clay matrix rocks.

Among the main results:

- Very low temperature transformation of magnetic minerals (50-120 ° C) and development of a 50-100 ° C geothermometer based on the proportion of nanomagnetites (M. Kars thesis).

- Characterization of the domain of stability of magnetite and pyrrhotite under diagenetic to metamorphic conditions.

- Characterization of magnetic minerals in a fault gouge (Thesis YM Chou)

- Identification of a co-seismic paleomagnetic record in the active Chelungpu fault (Taiwan)

  

2- Petrophysics

By essentially using the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy, I was mainly interested in the imprint of very weak deformations in sedimentary rocks.

SHALES 

- Quantification of a deformation gradient in the Hecho marls, Spain, linked to the propagation of a fault (Post Doc T. Boiron, Thesis F. Gracia).

- We are now studying shales as a tool for recording deformation in the framework of Francho Gracia's thesis, in the framework of a cooperation with UNIZAR University (Zaragoza)

CLASTICS ROCKS (Reservoirs)

I approached the damage to the matrices of reservoir rocks from the angle of several axes:

1) Characterization of the deformation footprint in mini salt basins in Turkey

2) Relation between the effective stress and the microfracturing of quartz grains in petroleum reservoirs (Thesis K. Merhian)

3) Extraction of the fabric constituents of the quartz, calcite, and pore matrix in fine-grained shales. We are developing a very promising new methodology as part of Hugo Saur's thesis (co-supervision of P. Moonen).

4) The analysis of a fold in Argentina showed the existence of very unusual deformation states that we have identified with the magnetic fabric and microtomography (Master Bruno Leclere)

2) We start (2020) a new project to investigate the deformation bands in clastics rocks using microtomography and rock mechanics (thesis Maria-Eleni Taxopoulou, co-director Nicolas Beaudoin)

FAULT GOUGE

The gouges of the Chelungpu fault (Taiwan), which contain the Chi-Chi seismic slip zone (1999, Mw 7.6), have given very good results. Recently, we have identified a magnetic fabric that mimics the mechanism at the focus (collaboration Y-M. Chou, Post-doc to come)

 

3- Foreland Basins 

Several themes are addressed, within the framework of several theses, masters, post-doc and ATER.

- Venezuela. Maturin and Serrana basin. The functioning of the El-Pilar fault generates an active deformation at the end of the Urica fault of the Riedel type. This deformation is characterized by a como-nuclide dating, paleomagnetism, and 3D seismic (thesis A.Fajardo).

- Taiwan. We used the thermal imprint in the footwall of an eroded ramp fold to propose constraints on the displacement (Thesis M. Mansour)

- Spain: Basin of JACA. Various actions have been carried out or are in progress. In the Sigues region, we worked on the damage km generated by the propagation of an inverse fault (post doc T. Boiron, Master PA. Grignard); the role of salt tectonics on the frontal area of ​​the Pyrenees at Riglos (Master C. Fumez). The thesis of N. Crognier made it possible to give thermal constraints and circulation of fluids in the Jaca basin. PA Grignard's current thesis completes this work by providing a reflection on sedimentary sources and the dating of orogenic fluids by the U-Pb method.

- Chainons Béarnais and Nappe des Marbres. Several actions are carried out by the team in this area. My action was focused on two approaches: paleomagnetism to understand the origin of a very deviated paleomagnetic component; and paleotemperature to map the temperature of the Chains by the Raman method (Master JB Cuyala, J. Lechantre, ATER A. Menant post-doc (Esther. Izquierdo, Thesis Landry Koffi) continues on this project. We were able to demonstrate , thanks to paleomagnetic data, we have shown that the Béarnais Chainons are an instantaneous image of pre-collisional deformation. An identical work is carried out in the Marble Nappe in collaboration with Juan-Jo Villallain (Burgos University)
